Background & History: 

In the early 1900s the country began paving highways as cars grew in popularity. In March 4, 1902 in Chicago, Illinois, The American Automobile Association was formed to act as a service organization for automobile owners throughout the country. Although members from different areas belong to their regional clubs, they can use all the services offered by AAA. Members pay a fee to belong and can take advantage of many of the clubs services, the most well-known of which are maps, travel discounts and roadside assistance.

AAA is a 50 million member non-profit automobile lobby group, service organization and insurance company.

Members belong to one of 69 clubs, such as AAA Northwest Ohio, AAA Mid-Atlantic, AAA Northern California, Nevada & Utah, the Automobile Club of Southern California, AAA Oregon/Idaho, AAA Merrimack Valley or Auto Club South,), and the clubs together own AAA.
 
In 1997, the name changed from American Automobile Association to just AAA, and today also sells life, health, homeowners, and car insurance depending upon the region. Customers can procure many different types of products and services if they decide to become a member including the amenities historically offered by the American Association of Automobiles.
 
The organization is still separated into regions as it was at its inception, and each region has its own web site and products and services.
