Background & History:

Aetna Life was originally formed as an annuity fund to sell life insurance and was an offshoot of the older fire insurer Aetna Insurance Company. Due to a state insurance regulation barring the same company from providing both fire and life insurance, Aetna Life was separately incorporated in Connecticut in 1853.

Over the next 150 years, the company evolved into a multiline insurer. But during the last decade, the company began to pare down its business and focus on its health care operations, divesting of its businesses that fell outside of the health insurance and related group benefits realm. The company also made several acquisitions that have built its health business. Its merger with U.S. Healthcare in 1996 and acquisition of Prudential Healthcare in 1999 have made this company the largest provider of health benefits with more than 21 million members.

Company Overview:

The company is publically traded and employs over 35,000 people. Although its history dates back to the 1850s, the Aetna of today began trading on December 14, 2000. It is one of the largest providers of health insurance and related benefits in the United States, providing benefits through employers in all 50 statesIn addition to health insurance, the company provides dental, pharmacy, group life, disability, and long-term-care products.

The company sells its products through captive agents as well as independent brokers, agents and consultants. Independent brokers and consultants are often involved in employer health plan selection and sales.

Interesting Factoid:

The name was inspired by an 11,000-foot volcano on the eastern shores of Sicily, Mt. Etna, then the most active volcano in Europe.
