Founded in 1927 by insurance salesman Herman Wittwer, American Family Insurance began as an auto insurance company aimed at insuring farmers. Initially known as Farmers Mutual Insurance, the company expanded its market and product line to meet the changing needs of its customers in 1963, adding several more products to its line at that time.
Today, American Family Insurance contracts with about 4,000 independent brokers and offers insurance and financial product lines in 19 states. The company is the nation’s third-largest property and casualty insurer.
