In the early 1900s the insurance industry was controlled by east coast companies, which wrote most of the life insurance policies in Texas. However, a Galveston, Texas, businessman William Lewis Moody, Jr. saw an opportunity, and in 1905 he opened the American National Insurance and Trust Company of Houston and promptly relocated it to Galveston where the company began operating with ten employees in the original Moody Bank building.

American National Insurance Company is the parent company of a group of companies, jointly called American National.
