Background & History:
H.O. Hirt and O.G. Crawford started Erie Insurance Exchange in 1925 based on the Golden Rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Three years later, the company opened another office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1933, Crawford retired and the company became a one-man show for the next several years. Later in 1953, the company expanded outside Pennsylvania into Maryland.
