Background & History:
The Farmers Insurance Group was founded in 1928 when the automotive insurer Farmers Inter-insurance Exchange was created by John C. Tyler and Thomas E. Leavey who believed farmers and ranchers had better driving records than city dwellers and wanted to tap this unmet market. The Fire Insurance Exchange and Truck Insurance Exchange were later established to respond to customers’ growing demand for additional services.
Company Overview:
Today, the group of companies has grown considerably and is the third-largest insurer of both automobile and homeowners insurance in the country and is a multi-line insurer and financial services organization. In 1998 the company was acquired by Zurich Financial Services, which has allowed it to expand further and offer more innovative products.
Farmers Group, Inc does business as Farmers Underwriters Association and with its subsidiaries, Truck Underwriters Association and Fire Underwriters Association, acts as the attorney-in-fact for Farmers Insurance Exchange, Truck Insurance Exchange and Fire Insurance Exchange. Additionally, the company acts as a holding company of the Farmers New World Life Insurance Company, which offers a range of products from universal life product to term and whole life plans and annuities all sold by Farmers agents .
In March 2000, the company acquired Foremost Insurance Company, which insures specialty products such as mobile homes, trailers and specialty dwellings.
Farmers’ agents, independent contractors and agents sell policies to more than 15 million customers.
