Background & History:

The Massachusetts Employees’ Insurance Association (MEIA) was established in 1912 in response to a law passed by the Massachusetts Legislature requiring employers to protect their employees with workers' compensation insurance. In 1917, MEIA changed its name to Liberty Mutual Insurance Company remaining a mutual company, which means it is owned by its policyholders rather than stockholders.

Over the years, the company has grown internally and through acquisitions and is now the 5th largest property and casualty insurer in the country.

Company Overview:

The company’s main source of business is insuring private automobiles, which represents over 30 percent of all premiums, while homeowners policies comprise about 10 percent.

Today, Liberty Mutual Holding is the parent company for over 38 subsidiaries. Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, Liberty Mutual Fire Insurance, and Employers Insurance Company of Wausau are the three largest.

The company provides policies through its own sales force, direct call centers and the internet as well as some independent brokers.
