Background & History:
The Nationwide Group was established in 1925 when the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation founded the main company, Nationwide Mutual Insurance, as a way to provide affordable auto insurance to its members. The company grew into West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Vermont and North Carolina by working with Farm Bureaus that sponsored the company.
In 1934, the company began insuring city dwellers and, through the purchase of a fire insurance company, started writing property insurance policies as well. By 1955 the Farm Bureau Mutual had expanded west to include 20 additional states, and the company changed its name to Nationwide Insurance.

The Group has many subsidiaries comprising more than 40 companies, which specialize in auto, life, health, term life, homeowners insurance, domestic property and casualty insurance, life insurance and retirement savings, asset management and strategic investments. Today the company has more than $135 billion in statutory assets.
The company sells its products and services primarily through captive agents but also uses direct response via the internet and call centers as well as independent agencies.
