Background & History:

In 1914 seven Missouri farmers met in Brunswick, Missouri, to combine their funds in order to buy goods and supplies and receive bulk discounts. The farmers realized banning together served other purposes as well. So three years later, the group joined with others across the state and formed the Missouri Farmers Association (MFA). The MFA noticed its farmers’ need for affordable insurance coverage, thus the MFA Mutual Insurance Company was born in 1946 with a loan from the MFA and seven employees.

In 1981, the company broke away from the Missouri Farmers Association and established a new identity as Shelter Insurance. Today the company was ranked among the top 50 in the United States.

Company Overview:

Shelter Insurance Companies comprise Shelter Mutual Insurance, Shelter General Insurance, Shelter Life Insurance, Shelter Reinsurance Company and Shelter Financial Bank. The company sells polices through 1,400 dedicated agents.
