Keep it Clean—maintaining a clean driving record will decrease your "risk" in the eyes of your insurer, thus lowering your premium.
Up Your Deductible—increasing your deductibles will ultimately lower your premium. Just be sure you chose a deductible that won't break the bank if your car needs post-accident repair.
Ask about Discounts—you may be eligible for discounts such as multiple-car or multiple-policy discounts. Ask your Colorado auto insurance agent for details.
Get Smart—before signing, conduct a background check on potential insurers. You can check customer satisfaction ratings and the company's financial status through companies like A.M. best.
Employing these tips will undoubtedly save you money on Colorado car insurance!
Requirements
Colorado car insurance makes the road safer for all of us. That's why all motorists are required to carry Colorado car insurance in the following coverages:
Liability Insurance—protects you from financial responsibility after an accident during which you injured other motorists. The minimum coverage amounts set by the State of Colorado are $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $15,000 per accident for property damage.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist—provides financial protection if you are hit by an uninsured driver, an underinsured driver or a hit-and-run driver. In essence, this coverage makes up for what the uninsured/underinsured driver lacks. Minimums for uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage are $25,000 per person, and $50,000 per accident.
Remember that these are the state-required amounts for Colorado auto insurance and may not be enough to protect you financially in the wake of a serious accident. It is for this reason that you may want to consider purchasing higher amounts of Colorado auto insurance.
Changes in the System
In November 2003, Colorado car insurance changed from a no-fault system to a tort insurance system.
The previous no-fault insurance system included a medical benefit known as Personal Injury Protection (PIP). PIP provided coverage for certain medical and rehabilitation expenses from injuries sustained in an auto accident.
The tort system, however, relies on the determination of fault in deciding which insurance company will pay the medical and rehabilitation expenses of the party injured in an auto accident. The injured party is also able to sue for other losses, such as pain and suffering.
This is yet another reason why you may want to consider purchasing higher coverage amounts of Colorado car insurance—doing so is fairly inexpensive and may pay for itself after a serious accident.
