Does the State of Idaho require Idaho car insurance?

Yes. All Idaho motorists must carry Idaho car insurance.

How much Idaho car insurance do I need?

The Idaho Department of Insurance reports that all motorists must have liability coverage. The minimum requirements for Idaho car insurance are $25,000 in bodily injury coverage per person, $50,000 in bodily injury coverage per accident and $15,000 for destruction of property per accident. This is commonly referred to as 25/50/15 coverage.

Remember that these are the minimum limits for Idaho car insurance, and 25/50/15 coverage may not be enough to cover any damages for which you are responsible following an accident.

Optional Coverage

By law, your Idaho car insurance agent is required to offer you coverage against uninsured or underinsured motorists. This coverage will be included in your policy unless you decline it in writing.

Collision coverage pays for damage to your car if it collides with another car or object. Comprehensive coverage pays for damage to your car from almost all other causes other than collision. For example, comprehensive coverage would cover damage from fire, vandalism, hail, flood and falling objects.

Since liability alone does not provide compensation for these damages, you may want to consider including these forms of coverage under your Idaho car insurance policy.

Can I be turned down for Idaho car insurance?

Yes. Every Idaho car insurance company has their own set or underwriting and rating guidelines and you can be turned down if you don't meet them. If you are turned down by multiple Idaho car insurance companies, you may be eligible for high-risk Idaho car insurance through the Idaho Automobile Insurance Plan.

Obtaining coverage through the Idaho Automobile Insurance Plan should be done as a last resort as premiums for this coverage are very high.

What can I do to save money on Idaho car insurance?

Shop Around.  Many companies offer comparable products for different prices. By using InsureMe's free referral service, you can compare prices in your area with ease.

Maintain a Clean Driving Record.  Essentially, your driving record is a direct representation of your conduct on the road. The more violations you have on your driving record, the higher your premiums will be.

Ask for Discounts. You may be eligible for discounts for insuring multiple vehicles with the same Idaho car insurance company, completing driver's safety courses or having anti-theft devices in your car. Be sure to ask your agent what discounts are available as they may not be offered up front.

Raise the Deductible.  Raising your deductible may substantially lower the premiums for your Idaho car insurance. Be sure to inquire about these adjustments, and above all - make sure you choose a deductible you can afford.
