Facts and Information about New Jersey Car Insurance

Paying for your New Jersey car insurance shouldn't be painful. Car insurance is supposed to protect your investment, so why continue to dole out hard-earned money for over-priced, unnecessary coverage?

Start by researching your New Jersey car insurance options. The more you know, the better shopper you'll be!

Two New Jersey Car Policies
New Jersey car insurance comes in two types: Standard Auto Insurance and Basic Auto Insurance.

Standard auto insurance is by far the most purchased car policy in the state. Here's what you'll get with this type of coverage:

  • Property Damage Liability — can be as low as $5,000 per accident
  • Bodily Injury Liability — can be as low as $15,000 per person, $30,000 per accident
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage — available up to the liability amounts
  • Underinsured Motorist Coverage — available up to the liability amounts
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP) — can be as low as $15,000 per person or accident

All standard auto insurance policies are required to carry uninsured motorist coverage and underinsured motorist coverage.

Other policy benefits, resulting from an accident or collision include: income continuation, essential services coverage—which pays for quality of life tasks you would normally do yourself—and death and funeral benefits.

Collision and comprehension coverage are available to purchase separately. The deductible is $750, according to the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance (DOBI). Ask your New Jersey car insurance agent for the right deductible for your budget.

Basic auto insurance policies provide New Jersey car insurance with minimum coverage.

The policy includes:

  • Property Damage Liability at $5,000 per accident
  • PIP at $15,000 per person, per accident

You may add $10,000 for bodily injury liability coverage. Collision and comprehensive coverage may be available with some car insurers.

Take note: this car insurance policy contains a Limited Right to Sue clause, which restricts your ability to sue should you be involved in an accident.

How to Reduce Insurance Premiums
After you've chosen your car insurance policy, talk with your New Jersey agent about tailoring your car insurance.

Set your deductibles higher.

File less claims and pay for minor repairs yourself.

Restrict certain people from driving your premier vehicle under the Named Driver Exclusion option. By naming the people who have your permission to drive a vehicle, you reduce the amount of collision and comprehensive coverage on that vehicle. You pay only for the people who are driving that vehicle!

Should an unnamed person drive your vehicle and be involved in an accident, your car insurance company could deny your collision and comprehensive claim.

Use your health insurer as your PIP coverage provider. If your health insurance covers vehicle accident injuries, consider using its health coverage as your PIP. Why continue to pay for duplicate coverage?

Be aware: if your health insurer is listed as your PIP provider, yet you lose your health insurance, your New Jersey car insurance carrier will charge you a $750 deductible for any medical claims.

You Have Car Insurance Rights
You have New Jersey car insurance consumer rights, protected by law and upheld by DOBI.

  • When you request car insurance quotes, insurance agents must present their quotes to you within five days from the date they received your request. This deadline assures that agents can't stall your car insurance purchase.

  • Car insurance agents must provide you with three coverage options, called Insurance Scenarios. This is required whether you already own car insurance and would like more policy information, or if you are shopping for a new policy, according to a DOBI pamphlet.
  • You may change policies and coverage limits any time during the life of a policy. Make certain to ask for your premium refunds if your costs are lowered.
  • Contact DOBI immediately if you think your New Jersey car insurance consumer rights have been violated.
