Important Information about Virgina Auto Insurance

Virginia auto insurance provides Virginians a valuable safety net in the event of an accident. But auto insurance costs have continued to increase steadily over the past five years, making finding an affordable policy difficult.

Virginia auto insurance protects you from being held responsible for others' losses in case of an accident. Many Virginians don't realize how costly going without auto insurance can be-until they are involved in an accident and their home, savings, future wages and other assets are seized to cover the cost of related car repairs, medical bills and lawsuits.

Mandated Coverage & the Law

Virginia maintains a financial responsibility law, which says you must either insure your car with a certified Virginia auto insurance company, or pay an uninsured motorist fee of $500 and drive your car at your own risk. This law is designed to keep drivers who cannot afford financial liability off the roads completely.

Your Virginia auto insurance policy must contain the following coverages:

  • Bodily Injury Liability-$25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident are required
  • Property Damage Liability-A minimum of $20,000 is required
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist-Minimums are $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $20,000 for property damage

Bodily injury liability pays for the medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost wages that you cause and are legally responsible for in an automobile accident. Property damage liability covers damage to buildings, other vehicles and their contents, and stationary objects. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage protects you when you are injured by a driver who has insufficient or non-existing Virginia auto insurance coverage.

You Have Rights!

As a Virginia consumer, the law gives you certain rights. Your application for Virginia auto insurance cannot be rejected because another auto insurance company has refused you coverage; you once purchased auto insurance through the assigned risk plan; or based on discriminatory factors such as age, race, sex or marital status.

Once your policy has been in effect for 60 days, your Virginia auto insurance company may not cancel it unless you fail to pay your premium or your driver's license is revoked or suspended.

If your Virginia auto insurer does decide to cancel or non-renew your policy, the company must give you at least 45 days written notice stating the reason for, and date of, termination.

Keeping Premiums Low

Acquiring Virginia car insurance coverage can be an expensive proposition. Getting the best coverage at the best price involves knowing and understanding the factors that drive insurance prices upward-and then taking the necessary steps to ensure these factors do not affect your own premium.

Follow these guidelines to help keep your Virginia auto insurance premium low:

  • Maintain the best driving record possible
  • Select your new car wisely
  • Ask about all possible discounts
  • Keep deductibles at the highest affordable levels
  • Buy more than one policy type with the same insurance company
  • Hold good credit scores

If you can't find auto insurance, don't despair!

Many Virginia auto insurance companies specialize in insuring high-risk consumers. However, if you can't find a company that is willing to insure you, coverage is available through the Virginia Automobile Insurance Plan. This program guarantees you coverage-but rates may be high. Ask any licensed Virginia auto insurance agent to apply you to this program if you cannot find adequate coverage elsewhere.
