Proposal could produce better health insurance quotes for many

Sicker Americans may find themselves getting better health insurance quotes in the future with help from a proposal offered this week by leading carriers.

According to an Associated Press report, America's Health Insurance Plans and Blue Cross and Blue Shield have offered to limit the practice of charging higher policy rates for people with health problems.

The report cited a letter from the two organizations to U.S. senators offering to "phase out the practice of varying premiums based on health status in the individual market." The offer would be in exchange for a federal law requiring all people to purchase health insurance, similar to a law currently in effect in Massachusetts. The proposal would reportedly apply to people who purchase their own policies, instead of companies that provide insurance.

Len Nichols of the New America Foundation told the AP that this offer is significant because the health insurers had "never in their history offered to give up risk taking."

The news could help a large number of Americans find lower health insurance quotes by eliminating the significantly higher costs they pay each month due to a history of illnesses such as diabetes.
