A recent report finds that the number of uninsured Americans has risen considerably in recent years, with help from a bad economy.
Some consumers whose workplaces don't offer health coverage are able to find reasonably priced insurance online. However, the report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation notes that in total, the percentage of non-elderly Americans with private health insurance has fallen from 73 percent to 67 percent since 1994.
"The rising cost of health care has largely been borne by workers who are not getting raises because of it and employers who are seeing these costs eat into their profit margins," said foundation CEO Risa Lavizzo-Moure, adding that reform will not be quick or easy.
In its findings, the foundation reported that there are now 9 million more uninsured people in the U.S. than in 1994, 6 million of them working people. Also, employee health insurance premiums are said to have risen about eight times faster than incomes during that time period.
The current economy has forced many Americans into even tougher circumstances when it comes to paying for health coverage, especially in light of an unemployment rate that many expect to exceed 10 percent in the coming months.
By checking for reasonably priced insurance online, consumers may be doing a service to themselves and their families in the long run compared to making do without it.
