Technology offers new ways to save on automobile insurance

Owning a GPS system or having OnStar service in your car can reportedly save you money on your automobile insurance.

A recent report in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel notes that one auto insurance company is providing discounts to drivers in 34 states who subscribe to the OnStar service. As part of that offer, people who drive less than 10,000 miles a year are eligible for a 26 percent discount on their premium.

The report notes that another insurer is offering discounts to drivers willing to track their miles using a GPS system. A number of other insurance companies have long offered consumers a way to save money if they drive relatively few miles, and new technology may make that trend likely to grow in the coming years.

Also, one popular insurer reportedly offers a discount plan involving GPS technology where parents can save up to ten percent on automobile insurance. Under that plan, parents can be notified when their teenager's car violates certain conditions like speeding or driving too far away.
