Protect your auto insurances - don't drive distracted

A growing number of states are reportedly considering new restrictions on driving and using a cell phone - a dangerous practice that has helped raise the cost of many people's auto insurances over the years.

According to a recent USA Today report, 42 states are now considering a total of 250 bills that would crack down in various ways on driving and cell phone use. Some states are said to be eyeing bans on all cell phone use while driving, while others would require the use of hands-free technology - although this has also been denounced as dangerous by some safety advocates.

The report cited statistics showing that about 11 percent of drivers may be using a cell phone at any given time.

While cell phone use is generally considered unsafe behind the wheel, a number of fatal crashes nationwide have also been linked to text messaging, which is banned for motorists in a number of states. For the motorist who causes the accident, the cost of their auto insurances are likely to increase significantly, for years in some cases.
