House insurance is important protection from the unexpected

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is offering some tips on how people with house insurance should respond in the event they are ever affected by a natural disaster or severe weather event.

The federal disaster relief agency offered its advice in light of the recent flooding in North Dakota that damaged a number of homes - but which could also have been much more severe if water levels had been even a little bit higher.

If you suffer damage to your home, FEMA recommends documenting it with photos, as well as written accounts of lost household items and other such things. Homeowners are also advised to be familiar with what their policies actually cover, and in the event of a natural disaster or other weather incident, to be aware of any local community organizations that may be able to provide some relief assistance.

"This turns a disaster 'victim' into somebody with a plan of action to overcome a challenge," said the FEMA statement.
Other tips include keeping your policy number accessible outside your home in case the house is damaged or destroyed, staying informed during any potential disaster situation, and having a family disaster plan that covers things like evacuation routes and meeting points.

Hopefully you'll never need to actually rely on your house insurance, but if you do, these tips should help make things work somewhat more smoothly.
