Massachusetts consumers have more freedom to pick their auto insurance company

More than one auto insurance company has entered the Massachusetts market in recent months thanks to a year-old reform package that helped improve consumer choices.

A Boston Globe report this week focuses on the impact the reforms have had so far, and the general consensus that the system is working and has been good for drivers statewide. Some consumers in Massachusetts are seeing their rates go up this year, although the Globe notes that this part of a more general nationwide trend that reflects higher prices being charged by auto body shops.

"Companies have responded positively to managed competition by competing for customers with lower rates for good drivers, discounts, and other benefits. Insurers no longer charge one price to all customers," insurance commissioner Nonnie S. Burnes told the newspaper.

The one-year anniversary of the new system in Massachusetts was marked on April 1st of this year.

The state has been of particular interest to industry observers because it had for decades maintained a system of government-set pricing. Because of that, many an auto insurance company had shied away from doing business in the state.
