Falling theft rates help you and your car insurance company
The nation's auto theft rate has now reportedly declined for five consecutive years, helping many a car insurance company save money in the form of fewer payouts and lower risk.
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, most parts of America saw their auto theft rates decrease in 2008. The main exception is several areas located close to the Mexico border. This is because thieves can often dispose of cars or parts in other countries much easier than in the U.S., as long as they're able to get over the border.
"The good news is, we're seeing steady progress in reducing the overall theft rate and that means Americans aren't shelling out as much to cover the cost of stolen vehicles in their insurance premiums," said Joe Wehrle of the NICB in a statement.
The organization reports that in 2008, Modesto, California and Laredo, Texas led the nation in vehicle theft, followed by Yakima, Washington and the San Diego/Carlsbad area of California. A total of six cities in California were represented in the top ten of 2008, with Bakersfield, Stockton, San Francisco/Oakland and Fremont also represented.
According to the NICB, a good way to avoid dealing with your car insurance company over a theft is to keep your doors locked and your windows closed, and never leave your keys in the ignition.
