Reckless Driving And Low Cost Car Insurance Rarely Go Together

The state of Illinois recently announced that aggressive law enforcement has helped lead to a drop in work zone highway fatalities, helping to preserve low cost car insurance in the process.

Illinois was among the states that marked National Work Zone Awareness Week in early April. The issue is particularly relevant in the state considering work zone fatalities have fallen 29.6 percent since peaking in 2003, when 44 people were killed - five of them workers.

Following the fatalities in 2003, Illinois launched a task force that offered recommendations for stepped-up enforcement and other measures.

In 2008, 31 people, two of them workers, died in Illinois roadside work zones. Given the dangers presented by reckless driving in work zones, a number of states have taken steps to toughen penalties. For example, Illinois drivers can face a $375 fine for a first offense and a $1,000 fine plus the loss of their license for 90 days for a second offense.

Illinois is also one of a number of states that have a "move over" law, which requires motorists to move into other lanes when passing police or construction vehicles on the highway.
