Caution On Country Roads Saves On Vehicle Insurance

In many parts of the country, a good way to keep the cost of vehicle insurance from going up is to exercise caution when passing farm vehicles on rural roadways.

This week, Pennsylvania's agriculture secretary, Dennis Wolff, issued a statement reminding drivers everywhere that in the springtime, more farm vehicles tend to be on the roads as farmers begin to work on their fields.

"Farmers necessarily travel on rural roadways in large tractors and farm equipment to access their fields. Everyone shares the responsibility of keeping our rural roads safe. Whether operating a farm implement, or sharing the road with one, I urge farmers and motorists to exercise an abundance of caution on rural roadways," said Wolff.

Pennsylvania even marked Rural Roads Safety Week in late April to help call attention to the issue. The state offered some safety tips for those who do encounter farm vehicles on the roads. Among them are slowing down for vehicles that carry an orange triangle emblem signifying that they travel under 25 miles per hour.

The state also advises that farm vehicles are more likely to be found on roads between April and November, and warns motorists not to pass them if they cannot see cars coming from the opposite direction. Since one accident or moment of reckless driving can seriously impact the cost of vehicle insurance, it's advisable to exercise caution on the roads at all times.
