Pay Attention To The Road For Low Online Auto Insurance Rates

A number of states are cracking down on a growing variety of forms of distracted driving, giving motorists yet another way they could end up paying more for their online auto insurance.

A report in Pennsylvania's Patriot-News newspaper, state Rep. Chris Ross has offered a bill that would allow police to fine motorists for forms of distracted driving that range from eating to putting on makeup to using a cell phone.

The newspaper notes that the Ross bill would not allow an officer to pull motorists over just for these infractions; a motorist would have to do something else to merit a police stop first, such as running a stop sign.

The legislation was passed by the Pennsylvania house but so far not the senate.

This bill could end up making more news if passed because much of the debate over distracted driving has been focused on cell phones and text messaging. Still, any kind of distracted driving, including eating and putting on makeup, can present a safety hazard by drawing a driver's attention away from the road. If this results in an accident, the next step is likely to be paying more for online auto insurance.
