Renters Insurance Offers More than Peace of Mind
For many people, renters insurance is something they tend to not think about until it's too late.
A recent report in the East Hampton Press newspaper of Long Island focuses on two area residents who lost all of their possessions in a house fire and wound up losing about $20,000 in belongings, with no insurance to help them cover the costs.
"Most people don't think they need it. They don't want to spend the money, and they don't think their possessions are worth a lot. Most people who don't have it are unaware that they should have it. It's not really that they can't afford it," Barry Bistreich, an examiner with the New York State Insurance Department, told the newspaper.
The newspaper also cited recent survey results showing that no more than 15 percent of renters give much thought to insuring their possessions, despite the high costs they can face from replacing items like clothing and electronics.
A report on MainStreet.com advises those who do open such policies to photograph their belongings and keep the images safe to make any future claims that much easier.
Many people may also be surprised to learn how affordable renters insurance can be.
