Traffic Violators Can Lose Points on Car Insurance

A growing number of states are reportedly relying on technology to catch people for routine traffic violations, with varying effects on car insurance costs from state to state.

A study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety finds that the use of cameras to monitor stoplight violations can reduce the number of incidents as much as 50 percent, and injury crashes by as much as 30 percent.

The organization also conducted a study in 2003 which found a 14 percent reduction in average speed in the District of Columbia after cameras were installed to catch speeders. This study also found that the proportion of vehicles exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour fell by 82 percent.

The IIHS notes that most traffic cameras are used for red light violations, although it says that more cities and states have been using them to catch speeders as well.

A map on the organization's website provides more information about the specific policies states have in regard to cameras. Policies range from having no formal laws on the books to violations that result in fines as well as points on car insurance policies.
