Going without Auto Insurance Can Cost Big Bucks

Industry experts are warning that people who forego auto insurance could be at even greater risk of financial disaster because many of them also tend to go without health insurance.

Many states have experienced an upswing in the number of people who are simply going without insurance to save money in a tough economy. However, since this happens to be illegal in most states, these drivers are potentially putting themselves at undue risk.

WILX-TV in Michigan spoke to one insurance official, Lori Conarton, who warned that the financial risk goes far beyond just paying fines and other legal fees.

"We all know how high medical costs can be, so if you're injured at all and you don't have insurance, you would have to pay. If you're trying to cut back, then you probably don't have health insurance either," Conarton told the TV station.

Despite the temptation to go for quick savings by skipping auto insurance, drivers should remember that they may someday find themselves needing coverage for something far more substantial than a dented fender.
