A growing number of consumers are keeping their pets in mind when shopping for car insurance quotes, according to recent reports.

A Detroit Free Press article says that at least four major auto insurance companies in the state of Michigan alone now offer various forms of coverage for pets that end up injured or even killed in an accident.

"Any company that supported animals like that, I wanted to support. I just hope I never have to use it," consumer Lonnie Olson told the newspaper. Of the four insurance carriers mentioned in the report, all offer coverage of at least $500, while one recently increased its coverage to $1,000. Even better for consumers, some of the companies are reportedly offering the new coverage at no extra charge.

With Americans more serious than ever about their pets and also spending more than ever on them, keeping them protected while taking them for a ride is an easy decision. The policies are catching on across the country, with one insurance company now offering such coverage in at least 20 states.
