Home Insurance Rarely Covers Mold
Mold can be a very serious problem for homeowners, especially when considering that most home insurance policies don't cover it.
According to the Insurance Information Institute website, standard home insurance covers things that are sudden and unexpected, neither of which necessarily apply to mold problems. One exception to this may be if a pipe bursts in a home.
The organization also notes that homeowners policies are not intended to cover routine costs like cleaning and home maintenance. With that in mind, things like rot and insect infestation are also generally not covered by insurance.
Fortunately, homeowners are usually able to effectively remove mold if they catch it early. Many people run a dehumidifier in moisture-prone areas such as the basement, or they take other steps to ensure proper ventilation. If mold is spotted early enough, it can be wiped away with bleach and water.
One good place to learn about preventing mold and the health risks that come with it is the Environmental Protection Agency website. Since home insurance usually doesn't cover mold, the next best option for homeowners is to be as aware and informed as possible.
