Homeowners Insurance Crucial for Natural Disasters
With the coming months likely to see more wildfires and hurricanes, consumers are being reminded to keep tabs on their homeowners insurance in the event they find themselves in an emergency situation.
In the aftermath of a recent wildfire near Santa Barbara that displaced up to 13,000 residents, the Insurance Information Network of California (IINC) is pointing out that under state law, homeowners may be eligible for reimbursement of evacuation costs.
"This should certainly serve as a stark reminder to residents across our state that wildfires can happen anytime, anywhere in California. Californians should take the time to prepare their homes, their families and their finances for risks ranging from wildfires to earthquakes," said IINC executive director Candace Miller in a statement.
Miller noted that in California, state law requires insurers to provide up to 24 months of additional living expense coverage for emergencies involving a mandatory evacuation. This cost can be applied to hotel lodging and other related expenses.
Considering the number of wildfires and hurricanes that have made national news in recent years, and with hurricane season right around the corner, consumers may find it advisable to check on what their homeowners insurance does and does not cover.
