Investigators Well Trained at Spotting General Auto Insurance Fraud
For anyone who's considering filing a fraudulent claim on their general auto insurance, investigators and law enforcement officials are warning that they'll be onto them from the start.
A report on KWES-TV in Texas warns consumers that investigators are extremely well-versed in almost every kind of insurance fraud conceivable.
"Obviously every time someone reports they've been a victim of arson or auto theft, then investigators follow up on them. At the very least, they'll be charged for false report to an officer. That could lead to felony level and depending on the crime, they may be prosecuted federally," Sergeant Alfredo Grimaldo of the Midland Police Department told the TV station.
The recession has helped fuel a nationwide upswing in fraudulent insurance claims. However, getting away with the crime tends to be much more difficult than people may suspect.
A local insurance investigator told the television station that common fraud attempts include trying to insure cars with existing damage, false theft claims and using a hammer to simulate hail damage. He adds that investigators can tell the difference in many such cases.
Along with exposing violators to fines and possible jail time, general auto insurance fraud tends to increase rates for everyone.
