New Laws Could Affect Price of Auto Insurance Quotes for Some

New safety proposals under consideration by Texas lawmakers could end up expanding seatbelt use in the state, resulting in fines and higher auto insurance quotes for those who fail to comply.

According to the Dallas News, one of the proposed bills would require all passengers in a vehicle to wear seatbelts, expanding an existing state law that requires drivers and front seat passengers to do so. Another proposal would reportedly require most children under age 8 to ride in safety seats.

State lawmakers are also considering a ban on using a cell phone while driving in an active school zone. The newspaper notes that this state law would be passed to impose a single specific policy across Texas, with a growing number of cities and towns having enacted their own such laws in recent months.

Supporters of the new seatbelt law reportedly point out that 75 percent of those ejected from a vehicle during a crash end up fatally injured, while opponents warn of added government intrusion.

Provided the laws are signed by Governor Rick Perry, Texas will be the most recent of several dozen states to approve stronger seat belt regulations, which can cost violators money in the form of tickets and higher auto insurance quotes.
