Ill-Advised Texting Can Drive Up Your Auto Insurance Quote

Recent media reports have highlighted the danger of texting while driving, but a significant number of Americans are still willing to risk their access to a low auto insurance quote by doing so.

A survey by Vlingo cites a recent survey where about 25 percent of cell phone users admit that they text while driving, despite laws against doing so in seven states. There have also been a couple of recent high-profile accidents involving mass transit drivers who were texting while on the job.

"Texting is such an integral component of our daily lives, and the cautionary tales about DWT (driving while texting) danger have not stemmed the tide," said Dave Grannan, CEO of Vlingo, in a statement.

According to the study, Tennessee has some of the most prolific offenders when it comes to texting while driving, with 42 percent of those surveyed admitting to doing so. Still, the survey noted that 83 percent in the survey believe that driving while texting, or DWT, should be illegal.

People who are distracted drivers are at greater risk of injuring themselves or others in an accident. Even for those who are merely caught driving while texting, the cost of an auto insurance quote is likely to increase substantially.
