Legislation Could Boost Market for Health Insurance Quotes

Depending on what Congress does in the coming years, many more Americans could find themselves in the market for health insurance quotes.

Of the many policy proposals circulating on Capitol Hill, some focus on the idea of requiring Americans to purchase their own health insurance as part of a broader overhaul of the healthcare system.

A Rasmussen poll finds that 31 percent of adults believe consumers should be required to purchase health insurance, no matter how healthy or young they may be. On the other side, 56 percent disagree and say people should only buy insurance if they choose to.

At least one state, Massachusetts, currently requires consumers to purchase insurance if their employer does not provide coverage. On that issue, Rasmussen found that 59 percent believe companies should be required to provide employee health coverage, while 30 percent disagreed.

The polling company noted that 74 percent of U.S. companies with five or fewer employees do not provide health insurance benefits. Of these workers, many are able to shop among different health insurance quotes for a policy that suits them.
