'Clunkers' Bill Could Provide Reasons to Shop for an Auto Quote

People who think they have no reason to shop for an auto quote because they can't afford a new car might change their tune if energy legislation currently being considered by Congress is passed.

The so-called "Cash for Clunkers" program is one of many that are included in a 900-page energy bill that was recently passed by a key congressional committee.

According to a statement from Congressman Ed Markey of Massachusetts, the program would provide vouchers of up to $4,500 for people who turn in old vehicles that get low miles per gallon for newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles. The program would apparently last for one year and aims to generate sales of up to 1 million vehicles.

"This deal is a triple play for our country. Consumers can trade in their old gas-guzzlers for a new, more efficient vehicle, we can reduce our dangerous dependence on imported oil, and help the struggling American auto industry get back on its feet," said Markey.

The bill still needs to be approved by the full House, and possibly by other congressional committees. However, if it passes, many Americans may suddenly find themselves checking for an affordable auto quote.
