More States Eye Texting Bans to Hold Down Car Insurance Rates

Massachusetts is expected to become the latest state to ban texting while driving, in an attempt to promote public safety and maintain reasonable car insurance rates.

A recent Boston Globe report says that the state senate has reversed its previous opposition to a ban on texting while driving in light of a recent high-profile subway crash in the city that was caused by a texting subway driver.

The report noted that state lawmakers had previously questioned the need for such a bill, based on the idea that it's unnecessary to "legislate against stupidity." Twenty-one states are considering texting while driving bans, and 12 have already passed them, including five this year, according to the Globe.

"A lot of us who opposed this in the past realize that there's a new generation of drivers who think it's OK to text while they're driving. This generation clearly doesn't get it. It's not the same as talking on a cell phone. You can't text safely while driving," State Senator Steven Baddour, a previous opponent of a ban, told the newspaper.

Texting while driving is a growing public safety problem that's bound to result in higher car insurance rates for those who cause an accident while doing it.
