Lawmakers Eyeing Proposals to Advance Low-Cost Health Insurance

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus has been holding a series of roundtable discussions that he hopes will contribute to the discussion of how to provide low-cost health insurance to every American.

In a recent statement, the Montana Democrat reported that he was holding three such discussions in Washington that would be attended by industry leaders as well as by all members of the Finance Committee.

"Our economy is in crisis, and healthcare reform is the only way we are going to get it back on track. What we hammer out at these roundtables is going to be the cornerstone of the legislation that we pass in coming months," said Baucus.

The senator noted that in his state, premiums have increased five times faster than average wages, which he believes is due to people paying for healthcare based on quantity instead of quality.

With the three roundtable discussions on various health insurance issues set to be concluded by the end of May, Baucus reported that he expects his committee to begin to mark up a bill as early as June.

Given the many complex issues surrounding the debate, it remains to be seen if he can deliver a bill that provides low-cost health insurance during the current legislative session.
