Various Options Available for Student Health Insurance

There are a variety of options for student health insurance that parents can consider, especially this time of year when many young people are heading home for the summer or launching their first job search.

A recent Chicago Tribune report lays out some of the things that parents can do when it comes to ensuring proper coverage for every member of their family, including those who will be on their own in the next couple of years. The newspaper cites statistics showing that about one-third of young adults spend at least some time uninsured during their first year out of college. One coverage option includes keeping a young person on the family insurance plan for as long as state law will allow them to stay on it.

Another idea is to seek a short-term insurance policy, which would generally be in effect for up to six months and which can reportedly cost as little as $60 per month depending on the deductible. The newspaper also suggests that students can explore their options in the individual insurance market, or seek out hospital-based discount plans for medical care or state programs. Until a recent graduate lands that first job, parents have a number of alternatives to choose from when it comes to securing peace of mind through student health insurance.
