Tire Safety Helps Motorists, Auto Insurance Companies

Motorists and auto insurance companies alike benefit from the improved highway safety that results from something as simple as regularly checking tire pressure.

According to the Rubber Manufacturer's Association (RMA), about half of vehicles in a recent study were found to have at least one under-inflated tire. One in five of these vehicles was said to have a tired under-inflated enough to raise concern about its safety and about wasting gasoline.

The group is involved with Tire Safety Week in mid-June, which educates consumers about what can be an overlooked but important safety tip.

"Few actions that are so simple and quick to do have such striking benefits. Taking five minutes every month to check tire pressure will put money in consumers' pockets, reduce national fuel consumption, help tires last longer and save lives," said Charles A. Cannon, CEO of the RMA.

Another common piece of advice is for motorists to check their tires to make sure that the treads are not worn out and to be sure no wiring from under the rubber surface is visible. Overall, improved tire safety will result in fewer highway accidents, saving on repair and medical costs for consumers and auto insurance companies.
