Poll Finds Many Teen Drivers Risk Arrest, sr-22 Insurance

Parents are being reminded that they should be extra watchful this summer for teen drinking and driving, which can bring burdens such as arrest, sr-22 insurance and injuries.

A recent survey from AllState found that 52 percent of Texas teenagers acknowledged having driven a car after drinking alcohol or having been a passenger with a fellow teen driver who had been drinking.

The survey found other unsafe driving behaviors were fairly common. For example, 88 percent of the teens admitted to texting or talking on cell phones while driving, while 33 percent said they had been in an accident during their first year of driving. Also, 48 percent reported that they had been stopped by police during the first year as drivers.

"These numbers are disturbing and show there is a critical need for parents and teens to talk about safe driving. Car crashes are the number one killer of teens and summer is the deadliest time of the year for teen drivers. The time to act is now," said insurance agent David Christopher.

Many drivers who run afoul of the law may not be familiar with sr-22 insurance, which varies from state to state but is generally a high-risk insurance policy for people convicted of DUI and similar offenses.
