General Liability Insurance Can Protect Against the Unexpected

One important tip for the growing number of people who make money writing blogs and other online resources from home is to carry some general liability insurance.

An article in the Baltimore Sun describes recent legal cases where an Ohio woman was awarded $129,794 from a blogger who had claimed her property was haunted, while another blogger was said to have been required to pay $1.8 million for calling someone a "failed lawyer." The report notes that even celebrities are not immune from legal action over what they say online, citing the recent libel lawsuit between singer Courtney Love and a clothing designer that she had criticized on MySpace and Twitter.

"Today, in a matter of a half-hour you could have set up your blog and gone out and said your piece about any number of issues," the report quotes Peter Spicer of Chubb Personal Insurance as saying. Even people who do not have blogs or websites but still work out of the house should consider general liability insurance, since it could also be useful if a visitor ends up being injured.
