Reckless Racers Can Drive Up Car Insurance Costs

Massachusetts is one state that has achieved mixed results in trying to hold down car insurance costs by targeting illegal drag races.

A recent Boston Herald report says that in February 2008, Massachusetts made drag racing a crime instead of a civil infraction. However, since then only six out of 124 people accused under the new law have actually been convicted.

The newspaper said that of these, 41 cases were dismissed or denied, 27 were continued without a finding and four were cleared. The rest were said to be pending.

The state changed its laws in response to some high profile accidents involving drag racing, including one involving a 10-year-old boy and his father who were seriously injured when they were struck head-on by a drag racer. The report also notes that alcohol is frequently a factor in these incidents.

Despite the headlines such incidents can generate, it doesn't take a case of severely reckless driving to noticeably increase one's car insurance rates - simply failing to obey basic traffic safety laws can have the same effect over time.
