Less Traffic Can Mean Better Car Insurance Quotes

Drivers may find car insurance quotes to be somewhat more affordable amid indications that Americans are spending less time stuck in traffic and less time in their cars.

According to new figures from the Texas Transportation Institute, travelers spent an average of one hour less per day stuck in traffic than they did in 2007, wasting an average of one gallon less of gasoline. The institute said that this represents a relatively rare break from a 25-year trend that has generally seen increased auto traffic in most U.S. cities.

Much of the decline is said to be due to the recession, which has so far forced more than six million workers into unemployment lines while also forcing consumers to think twice about expenses like gasoline and vehicle maintenance, further cutting back on their trips as a result.

Last year's high gas prices were also said to have an effect on drivers that is still being felt to this day.

Despite the improvement, the institute notes that commuters still require about 25 percent more time for their trips, and that the overall cost in wasted fuel and lost productivity per worker stands at about $750 per worker.

While traffic is still a problem in many areas, any improvement is welcome considering the higher accident rates and ensuing impact on car insurance quotes it can have for consumers.
