Safe driving goes a long way towards deciding the cost of one's auto insurance policy - which is why one major insurance company releases an annual list of the safest and most dangerous U.S. cities for driving.
In the latest report, the three safest driving cities in the U.S. were said to include Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Fort Collins, Colorado and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Other cities listed among the top ten safest for drivers were Knoxville, Tennessee; Fort Wayne, Indiana and Eugene, Oregon.
The most dangerous driving cities were led by Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Maryland and Glendale, California. Others earning this dubious distinction were Hartford, Connecticut, Providence, Rhode Island, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and San Francisco, California.
Alexandria, Virginia earned kudos as the most improved city over the last year for drivers, who will now drive an average of 1.8 years longer without an accident. That currently translates into a 7.2 year average window between auto accidents for Alexandria residents.
Overall, driving has been getting safer across the country, which is good news for auto insurance rates. Earlier this year, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced that traffic fatalities fell significantly in 2008, continuing a trend that has been underway for several years now.
