Truck Safety Rule Will Benefit Consumers, Car Insurance Companies

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced new safety rules for trucks that should benefit drivers as well as car insurance companies.

According to the agency, trucks will now be required to be able to come to a complete stop within 250 feet if they are traveling 60 miles per hour. Previous standards required the trucks to be able to stop within 335 feet.

"Safety is our highest priority. Motorists deserve to know they are sharing the road with large trucks that are up to the safest possible standards, so they can get home alive to their families," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

The NHTSA estimates that the new requirement will save 227 lives each year and prevent 300 serious injuries while also avoiding $169 million in property damage.

Such measures are good news for drivers as well as car insurance companies from a financial standpoint as well as a safety one since lives and money are expected to be saved each year.
