Safer Vehicles More Likely to Get Cheap Car Insurance

Consumers who are seeking cheap car insurance may do well to check on their vehicle's safety rating, regardless of what size it may be.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, safety tests on micro and minicars, which have become increasingly popular in the last couple of decades, find that some tend to be better equipped than others to survive a rollover accident. The IIHS testing found that the Smart Fortwo offers the best roof strength against rollovers, potentially sparing its occupants from more serious injuries and insurers from larger damage claims. The small vehicle with the weakest roof was said to be the Chevrolet Aveo. Specifically, the Smart's roof strength was able to sustain 5.4 times the vehicle's weight, while the Aveo was able to withstand three times the vehicle's weight.

The IIHS also tested the Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Mini Cooper and Toyota Yaris and found that their roof strength was acceptable. Cheap car insurance also depends on factors like one's safe driving skills, but driving a vehicle that is more likely to emerge from a crash with less damage is another sound strategy.
