A Little Prevention Can Hold Down Health Insurance Cost

A group of nonprofits are reminding consumers that preventive medicine can be a valuable way to control one's health insurance cost.

Leaders of six healthcare foundations, including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Kaiser Permanente and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation recently released a letter emphasizing the importance of preventive medicine as a crucial part of reforming the overall healthcare system.

The organizations are part of the Healthy Eating Active Living Convergence Partnership, which is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to better educate citizens about

"It is time to scale up these efforts by including robust financial support for community prevention in any health systems reform," said the letter, which was signed by leaders of all six organizations.

According to the organizations, investing $10 per person in prevention could result in $16 billion in savings for the overall healthcare system.

One reason prevention is so important to holding down one's health insurance cost is that conditions like diabetes often result in higher premiums and medical claims if not managed properly.
