Running a Small Business? Double Check Your Homeowner's Insurance

People who run a small business out of their house are frequently advised to be sure that they are properly covered by their existing homeowner's insurance.

Writing in the Augusta Chronicle newspaper, David Colmans of the Georgia Insurance Information Service recently noted that the recession is leading more people to consider launching home based businesses.

With that in mind, he reminded would-be entrepreneurs to update their policies, with a reminder that standard coverage does not typically apply to things like lost business equipment, liability and other such risks.

He also noted that many companies offer plans that cover home business pursuits and that existing policies can often be upgraded to do so at a reasonable cost.

Elsewhere, people who have clients or customers in their home are especially advised to secure the right coverage because if that person is injured in a fall or some other mishap, the entrepreneur may be exposed to an expensive lawsuit.

Technology has made it easier than ever to run a small business from home, and people who choose to pursue such an opportunity need to make sure they are protected by the right homeowner's insurance.
