Careless Motorists Can Expect a Higher Auto Insurance Quote

People can find a variety of ways to save money on their next auto insurance quote with methods like raising their deductible or getting an anti-theft system. However, the best way of all may be to drive carefully at all times.

Recent statistics from the Oregon Department of Transportation offer a look at the various ways that drivers, as well as pedestrians and cyclists, can make mistakes that result in injuries or worse.

According to a recent fact sheet from the department, there were nearly 42,000 vehicle crashes in Oregon alone last year, 369 of which were fatal. The most common type of fatal crash involved a driver striking a fixed object.

For drivers, the most common cause of a crash was failing to avoid a parked or stopped vehicle, driving too fast, failing to yield right of way, and improperly changing traffic lanes. Other leading causes included following another vehicle too closely and disregarding traffic signals.

For pedestrians who ended up involved in an accident with a motorist, crossing between intersections, failing to yield right of way and crossing against a signal were the top causes. The most common cause of accidents for bicyclists were failure to yield right of way, riding against traffic and disregarding traffic signals.

Drivers are not always at fault when they do end up in an accident, but when it comes to safety and paying the lowest auto insurance quote, caution is always the best idea.
