Flood Risk Can Impact Homeowners Insurance Rates

People who live in flood-prone areas often find that their location can have a considerable effect on their homeowners insurance rates.

This has increasingly become a fact of life for people in many different states considering the hurricanes and other severe weather events that have affected millions and taken a toll on many insurers' bottom lines.

However, not all home water damage is caused by hurricanes and floods. Sometimes the cause is far more routine.

With that in mind, an insurance company in Washington State is offering some tips on how homeowners can protect themselves from water damage. Such damage can often become more expensive to repair over time and is not always covered if it is found to be caused by failure to perform basic maintenance.

According to the company, homeowners should replace washing machine hoses every five years and should also check them regularly for cracks. Checking the floor around a water heater for signs of leaks is also advised, as is removing outside hoses before frost sets in and checking dishwasher and refrigerator faucet lines for leaks. Taking such simple steps can result in big savings on homeowners insurance.
