Fewer DUI Convictions Could Reduce Average Car Insurance Quote
States across the country are considering new laws involving a technology that could affect the average car insurance quote.
For example, New York Newsday notes that state senators there have unanimously approved legislation that would mandate ignition locks for all residents convicted of DUI offenses. Current law only mandates such locks for more serious offenders who have a .18 blood alcohol content.
The newspaper notes that depending on how much alcohol is in an offender's system, the law could require the devices be included on one's vehicle for a period of three months to one year.
Elsewhere, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has approved a pilot program for Los Angeles and several other counties where instead of having their licenses suspended, first-time offenders will be able to have ignition locks installed.
A number of other states across the country have enacted their own similar laws and have generally seen a decline in the number of people who re-offend after their first arrest. With that in mind, a trend toward greater safety could have a positive effect on the average car insurance quote.
